Latinos living in South Florida who overwhelmingly supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election are standing by their vote despite their concerns about his immigration policies, NBC News reports.
Reinerio de la Torre, a 56-year-old electrician who came from Cuba almost two decades ago, said Trump has gone too far with his immigration policies and deportation efforts. He also disagrees with the partial travel ban on Cuba, saying “visas should be decided case by case.”
However, de la Torre said he still supports the president and is optimistic about what's to come for the rest of his term.
“But it’s still early in the presidency and we have to give him time to see what he does,” de la Torre said outside Hialeah’s City Hall.
A second resident, Patricia, agreed with de la Torre's sentiment.
“He is deporting innocent people, and I don’t like the tariffs, but maybe at the end it will be for the better,” she said.
Roughly 70 percent of Cuban Americans in Florida voted for Trump in the 2024 election. In Hialeah, a city in Miami-Dade County with a robust Cuban American population, support for Trump was among the strongest.
Few Cuban Americans appear to regret their vote, but many individuals have voiced their concerns over Trump's immigration policies, including the president's move to revoke the legal status of migrants who entered the U.S. through the Biden-era CBP One app, which temporarily allowed migrants to live here. News of families being separated amid mass deportation efforts has also alarmed some in the community.
Mirta Marino, a 78-year-old retired bank worker, said, “Trump is making tough policy decisions, but they are necessary to fix the country.”
“There are people getting deported for no reason,” Rodrigo Torres, a 22-year-old business owner, said. “But I would still vote for Trump over Harris.”
