North Carolina police officers falsely accused a Black tow driver of stealing a car that they later tried to retrieve from the yard for the owner, per WFMY.
Anthony Broadway, owner of Casey's Towing in Greensboro, said the incident unfolded after one of his drivers towed a car from an apartment complex in High Point. The following day, Greensboro police officers showed up at the yard, accusing the tower of stealing the vehicle and saying tow signs weren't in the right place at the complex.
Broadway said the officers attempted to take the car and return it to the owner. Despite officers saying towing signs weren't placed correctly, Broadway shared photos of the warning at the apartment complex.
"The intimidation factor was crazy because it was more like look- you know, we're here to take this vehicle, you've done wrong, it's no questions asked, no nothing, like it was a very stressful situation for my driver," Broadway said.
Greensboro police officers ultimately pulled back after a city attorney advised them not to take the vehicle, video shows.
No arrests were made at Casey's Towing, but "if the city attorney didn't get involved, someone was probably going to jail that day, which is very unfortunate," Broadway said.
Broadway said the incident was traumatic for his employees, and he feels like officers violated his rights.
The Greensboro Police Department said they started an internal investigation into the incident.
"Police department leadership became aware of a video Sunday involving an interaction between GPD officers and a local towing company in the 200 block of Sussmans Street on the afternoon of June 7, 2025. The department immediately requested its professional standards division to conduct an investigation, which is ongoing at this time," the department said in a statement.
Greensboro police said the officers involved in the incident are still on duty.
"I'm a firm believer that you know, I support the law enforcement for what they do, but I think that it should never be a situation where, you know, anybody that's at work should feel threatened and intimidated by the police when they're just doing their job," Broadway said.
