The former University of Kentucky student sentenced to a year in prison after she launched a racist attack against her Black peer is seeking early release.

According to court documents obtained by LEX 18, Sophia Rosing recently requested a judge suspend her prison sentence in connection to her 2022 attack on University of Kentucky student Kylah Spring, saying she's “dedicated herself to personal growth and accountability.”

Rosing attacked Spring while she working in a campus residence hall. Video showed Rosing, who was reportedly drunk at the time of the attack, hurling the n-word repeatedly at Spring as she hit and kicked the student worker.

In her request for early release, Rosing argued that she does “not pose an ongoing threat to public safety” and remaining in prison would delay her rehabilitation.

“She intends to seek professional counseling, complete alcohol treatment programs, and enroll in racial sensitivity training,” the court documents state.

Rosing was arrested on the night of the attack and later expelled from the university. A grand jury indicted Rosing on six counts, including assault, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication. She pleaded guilty and is currently serving her one-year sentence under protective custody at the Fayette County Detention Center.

In the new court documents, Rosing claimed that the "significant public scrutiny" and "reputational harm" she suffered from the incident would serve as "strong deterrents against re-offending."
